I hear this a lot.
The adolescents you think are “difficult” may actually be responding correctly to an unsafe environment.
Here is a simple framework to follow If you want adolescents to develop confidence, and make responsible decisions.
✅Create emotional safety
✅Provide structured support
✅Offer opportunity within safety
Emotional safety allows adolescents to speak openly without fear of judgement. When they feel respected and listened to, trust is established and trust enables growth.
Structured support provides guidance through mentorship, consistent check-ins, and access to help when they face challenges related to identity, peer influence, relationships, and mental wellbeing. This strengthens them and improves decision-making.
Opportunity within safety allows young people to practice responsibility. When they are trusted to lead discussions, participate in decisions, and take ownership of initiatives, confidence and character develop naturally.
Safe spaces do not make adolescents dependent they prepare them to engage the world with clarity and responsibility.
